Basic Math Strategies

>> Tuesday, December 14, 2010

One of the most difficult sections of the CAHSEE is the math section. Because of the broad range of topics and concepts this section covers, it can also be one of the hardest sections to prepare for. Because of this, having the right strategy in place for the math questions can be significant.

Be Prepared

While math may be the most difficult section on the exam, it can also be one of the easiest to prepare for. There are always core principles and formulas within each content strand of the math section. If there is a major concept or formula within a content strand, there's a good chance it will be covered on the exam. Always make sure you know the basic formulas and concepts, as well as the most popular ones. If you're going to do any last minute reviews on exam day, this should be the material you cover.

Reading Matters, Even In Math

Always make sure to read the question. Once you have read the question, re-read it just to make sure you understand exactly what they're asking for. This is especially true for the math section given the complicated and detailed nature of the majority of the questions.

Do The Work

When provided with paper to do the math, use it. While it may seem simpler to try and do the math in your head, it is typically much easier to do on paper. It is also easier to catch your mistakes when writing out the calculations than it is when doing the math in your head.
While there may be a few questions on the exam that require some fairly in depth calculations, the majority of the questions should be fairly straightforward, relying on your basic knowledge of the concepts being covered. In other words, if the equation you're using to try and solve the problem is taking up half the page, you're most likely doing it wrong. Most equations should be simple, as long as you know the correct formulas to use.
